Overview |
Under the SSI program, the benefits amount equals the maximum Federal Benefits Rate for the current year.
There are no retroactive benefits paid prior to the date of an SSI application. (Under social security disability a claimant may receive benefits for the 12 months preceding the date of application if all requirements are met.)
Since 1996 there is an effective waiting period for SSI applicants until the first of the next month after all requirements are met.
SSI payments are processed at the local social security office.
SSI benefits applicable to one month are paid during that month. For example, the check received in January is for January. Benefits arrive in the mail or by direct payment on the first of the month. A mailed SSI check says SSI on the check and comes in a blue envelope.
